Watch trend: Luxury for every day

In the world of women’s luxury watches, a distinctive trend has recently emerged for pieces which combine lavish watchmaking expertise with minimalistic design and clean lines.

Within this trend, watch straps and bracelets are at the forefront of the design, and are widened or multiplied, creating a more androgynous aesthetic. The main stylistic benefit of such laconic approach to design is that these luxury watches are suited to wear in all situations, rather than being precious pieces only appropriate during cocktail hour.

The latest horological offering from Tiffany & Co. the ‘Tiffany T’ watch is a great example of the trending design. This collection has been a perceptible move by Tiffany & Co. to appeal to a younger, more fashion forward generation in their fine jewellery and watch departments. The timepiece was created in yellow gold on a black strap, or sterling silver on a black or ‘Tiffany Blue’ strap. Its cuff-like design is accented by a ‘T’ emblem on one end which opens to reveal a brushed dial marked by a single baguette diamond. This watch provides a graphic, bold style statement which embodies minimalism and sleek sophistication.

Similarly, Chanel’s ‘Code Coco’ is a striking cuff style watch which attends to the codes of the Chanel brand. It incorporates the ‘Mademoiselle’ clasp detail from the iconic 2.55 handbag, the quilted motif which has been an emblem of the house since 1955, and finally, a simple band of diamonds. Gabrielle Chanel’s devotion to diamonds above all gems was immortalised in the quote: “If I have chosen the diamond, it is because it represents, in its density, the greatest value in the smallest volume.” Four versions of the ‘Code Coco’ watch are available: one with steel, one with steel and black ceramic decoration, and two versions of each of these with diamonds surrounding the dials.

During Baselworld 2018, Bulgari released a series of their latest timepieces to great acclaim. Undoubtedly the most famous of the Italian house’s watches has been the ‘Serpenti’, distinctly recognisable for its snake head design dials. The most recent version of this model ‘Twist Your Time’ was presented at the fair in March and features a wrap-around bracelet comprised of gold chains or various leather straps: red, green, beige, purple and others. As with other brands whose watches pertain to this trend; in ‘Twist Your Time’ model the bezel is accented with a delicate set brilliant cut diamonds, as well as a cabochon rubellite crown.
