As the great finale of awards season, the Oscars is the culmination of all the glamour, colours, trends and finery we’ve seen over the last three months. On the 97th Annual Academy Awards red carpet, stars embraced ‘Old Hollywood’ glamour with contemporary ballgowns, voluminous silhouettes, opera-length gloves and gorgeous Audrey Hepburn-inspired gowns in champagne, baby pink and crystal-encrusted gowns. As for the jewellery, delicate necklaces skimming the collarbone were clearly the front-runner, closely followed by diamond earrings, rings and a smattering of matching bracelets. Could the stars have pushed their jewellery game further? Absolutely, but there were still some sparkling Oscars jewellery highlights to satiate our high jewellery appetites. Let’s take a closer look…

Tiffany & Co. has been a constant presence throughout this season, especially around the neck of now-Oscar-winning actress, Mikey Madison. The 25-year-old star opted for a black and pink Dior gown with an archival Tiffany &Co. diamond necklace (1909-1919), which she wore alongside a pair of platinum and diamond earrings, a matching bracelet, a 9-carat diamond ring, and a raspberry pink tourmaline ring. Other stars who wore the New York-based brand include Gal Gadot, who chose a 1980s Angela Cummings for Tiffany & Co. necklace with 6.35-carats of round brilliant-cut diamonds in gold and platinum, and Meg Ryan in a pair of Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany & Co. Cones with Petals ear clips, a Jean Schlumberger Stitches bracelet, a ring with a 22-carat rubellite, and more than 12 carats of diamonds in a further two rings.

As you might imagine, other big names were in attendance on big-name celebrities, such as Cartier around the neck of Elle Fanning and Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña. The latter wore the Cartier Panthères Versatiles necklace from the latest chapter of the Nature Sauvage High Jewellery collection, crafted in white gold and set with a 10.10-carat Zambian cabochon emerald, onyx and diamonds. We have only seen gouache paintings of this piece, so perhaps it arrived in Los Angeles directly from the Maison’s workshops!

Although she narrowly missed out on an Oscar, actress Demi Moore maintained her composure in a stunning Armani Prive gown, accessorised with Chopard chandelier earrings and a Chopard cuff bracelet, set with a 20-carat emerald-cut diamond and a 15-carat emerald-cut diamond. Another who chose exclusively white diamond is Margaret Qualley, who paired a black, backless Chanel gown with a Chanel Motif Russe diamond necklace in 18k white gold, worn in reverse to dangle between her shoulder blades. A pair of Impression Florale diamond earrings, an Étoile Filante diamond bracelet, and a Ruban diamond ring from Chanel completed the look.

Another group of women – Selena Gomez, Monica Barbaro, and Isabella Rossellini – chose Bvlgari for the evening, all to beautiful effect. The former looked sensational in a champagne-coloured Ralph Lauren gown (complete with 16,000 glass drops) and the Bvlgari Shape of Matter High Jewellery necklace, set with 49.45 carats of diamonds and a 10.16-carat pear-shaped diamond drop. Elsewhere, there were some impeccable Lorraine Schwartz jewels on display, including a necklace with seven graduated pear-shaped diamonds worn by Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine and a diamond necklace with a pear-shaped ruby drop, worn by British singer Raye.

De Beers dressed some influential stars, including Ariana Grande, Scarlett Johansson and model Anok Yai. Glinda the Good Witch, aka Ariana Grande, wore the De Beers Adonis Rose necklace with a pear-shaped diamond drop, totalling 6.51 carats, alongside a pair of De Beers Classic diamond studs, an Old Bond Street cushion-shaped diamond ring of 5.66 carats, and a Classic round brilliant-cut diamond ring, all in platinum or 18k white gold. Scarlett Johansson wore a vintage Thierry Mugler navy blue gown and matching gloves with the De Beers The Alchemist of Light Midnight Aura necklace, with 74.73 carats of diamonds in 18k white gold. She matched this with the Midnight Aura stud earrings for a further 9.58 carats. Finally, Anok Yai added some subtle golden hues to her ensemble, wearing the Forces of Nature Dignity Tassel necklace, the Dignity diamond jacket ring, and the Dignity diamond cocktail ring, all in 18k yellow gold. She finished this rough diamond look with a pair of De Beers Talisman diamond hoop earrings.

It was great to see Messika represented on the red carpet, too, including the Pear Appeal earrings and the Solar Diva necklace with a 34-carat yellow cushion-cut diamond worn by singer Doja Cat. Wicked cast member Marissa Bode also wore the Diamond Catcher earrings and Saguaro ring by the French brand, both of which stood out against her ruby red dress (perhaps inspired by Dorothy’s ruby slippers!).

Finally, one of the night’s biggest presentations of jewellery came courtesy of Boucheron, which dressed men and women in equal measure. Highlights include French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat in a long-line diamond necklace, Michelle Yeoh in a feather-shaped ear-cuff and necklace, and Felicity Jones in an Art Deco bracelet from the Maison’s private collection (c. 1927), the Vendôme Liseré pendant earrings, and the Vendôme Liseré solitaire ring, set with a 4.10ct emerald-cut diamond. Turning to the gents, Kit Connor wore a Boucheron Art Deco feather, diamond and platinum brooch from 1924, while Colman Domingo wowed in his usual debonair fashion in a Boucheron tassel bracelet and brooch, both in 18k yellow gold. Others stuck with their tried-and-true adornments, such as Timothee Chalamet in a Cartier necklace and matching bracelets, Joe Alwyn in a suave Cartier lapel pin, and Robert Downey Jr. in a Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. brooch with rubies and diamonds in gold and platinum.

Before we mention the Oscars after-parties, there are two more talented men to mention. The first is Adrian Brody, who continued his award-winning streak by wearing what appears to be a fabulous emerald and diamond brooch by Elsa Jin. The second is Paul Tazewell, who won an Oscar for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked. He adorned his white shirt with a fantastical diamond and platinum brooch (c. 1950) from Fred Leighton, set with more than 45 carats of round and baguette-cut diamonds, plus a pair of Art Deco emerald and diamond cufflinks and a Kwiat Ashoka diamond and platinum snake ring. Trust a costumier to get their own look spot on!

Finally, let’s cover some of the highlights of the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, which typically requires a complete costume change for most stars. Mikey Madison wore a Tiffany & Co. necklace with 14 carats of spinels and diamonds in platinum and yellow gold, which looked striking against her black dress. Selena Gomez, Lisa, Lindsay Lohan, Cynthia Erivo, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gabrielle Union and Anna Sawai all chose wonderful necklaces to complement their looks, while Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, and Joe Locke offered some of the best men’s looks.

Two stars wore pieces straight from the Boucheron Or Bleu Carte Blanche High Jewellery collection from 2024: Tracee Ellis Ross opted for the Sable Noir necklace with crystallised black sand and diamonds in 18k white gold, while Sarah Paulson wore what appeared to be the Iceberg pendant earrings with frosted rock crystal and diamonds in 18k white gold.

So, what did you make of this year’s Academy Awards jewellery looks? Personally, I feel it needed an injection of big juicy colour, like some great sapphires, rubies, emeralds, Paraibas or spinels. Instead, the shift towards ultra-feminine, old Hollywood delicacy has resulted in a vintage aesthetic that lends itself well to subtler necklaces, earrings and bracelets. No doubt all are beautiful, but do they make us gasp here at KaterinaPerez.com? Not quite.

Essential Passion: The Artistic Pursuits of Mehragin Rahmati of Mergin Jewelry

Jewellery can be thoughtful and insular, or it can be effusive and bold and full of character that makes it stand out from the crowd. I would put the colourful and charismatic creations of Mehragin Rahmati into the latter camp because of their attention-grabbing silhouettes, unusual structures, and confident mineral palettes.
