Show Time: Conversation-Starting Necklaces at the 2024 Golden Globes
With a plethora of plunging, square and V-shaped necklines, this year’s Golden Globe Award looks were crying out for statement neckwear. And while some stylists and Hollywood stars were willing to embrace a diamond necklace or two, some were leaving the decolletage conspicuously bare. Are jewels being purposefully missed to make a less is more statement? Or is a smooth, bare sweep of skin across the chest a new trend high jewellers should note? Let’s look at the evidence together…
Emma Stone in ethereal Louis Vuitton, Taylor Swift in a shimmering column of metallic green, Jennifer Lopez in a baby pink Nicole + Felicia Couture gown, and Jennifer Aniston in neat black Dolce & Gabbana. What do all these Hollywood attendees at the 81st Golden Globe Awards have in common? They weren’t wearing a much-needed necklace! This year’s glittering ‘Award Season’ has kicked off, and all of us here at KaterinaPerez.com are left scratching our heads, wondering if necklaces are out or in!
In some cases, the lack of a necklace was made up for by fabulous earrings, such as Margot Robbie in a pair of 30-carat diamond stud earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, Angela Bassett in ruby and diamond tassel earrings by Lagos Jewellery, and Natasha Lyonne in Schiaparelli. However, actresses like Natalie Portman, Julia Garner, Elizabeth Olsen, Ayo Edebiri, Carey Mulligan, Rachel Brosnahan, and model Heidi Klum all seemed to purposefully avoid neckwear despite an expanse of empty skin.
Despite this, it seems like the other half of Tinseltown didn’t get the memo! Barbie actress America Ferrera looked sensational in custom Dolce & Gabbana, complete with a double-row Harry Winston Secret Combination diamond necklace, Shinde diamond flower earrings, and the Sunflower diamond ring (with more than 47 carats total). Dame Helen Mirren also wore Harry Winston, this time a Wreath diamond necklace with nearly 50 carats, all set in platinum, plus a further 16 carats in her Harry Winston Cluster earrings. Elsewhere, Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt opted for Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. diamond necklaces to accentuate their looks, while Jennifer Lawrence also sported a Tiffany diamond necklace with an 11-carat diamond drop. Reese Witherspoon was also spotted wearing Tiffany & Co. against her dramatic Monique L’Huillier gown.
There was definitely a sense of classic elegance on the cream-coloured carpet, with lots of sleek column dresses, structured ball gown shapes, simple ponytails and muted make-up. Perhaps for some stylists, the introduction of a necklace would have ruined their vision of a minimalistic, paired-back ensemble. Stars like Elizabeth Debicki demonstrated that ethereal sleekness could still be achieved in conjunction with layered necklaces, which in her case came from the Dior Joaillerie Rose Dior Bagatelle collection. Credit must also go to Brie Larson for pairing a lilac Prada dress with round diamond studs and an Ashoka diamond rivière necklace, both by Kwiat. Other honourable mentions include Julianne Moore and Elle Fanning in Cartier, Keri Russell in Jacob & Co, and Ariana Greenblatt, who excelled at the ‘quiet luxury’ trend in a Chopard-infused tuxedo ensemble.
However, the best look of the night must go to singer Dua Lipa, who once again turned to Tiffany & Co. (following a remarkable showing at the Met Gala 2023) to put jewellery front and centre. She wowed in a black Schiaparelli gown and an archival necklace from 1962 with yellow beryl, topaz, quartz and diamonds, all in gold and platinum, plus a yellow sapphire ring. Our prediction that warm-toned gems will be the big hit this year is starting to ring true!

Last but not least, there are two more A-listers we want to mention. Firstly, Selena Gomez seemed to bring out the best of the mid-2000s in an asymmetric Armani dress and lashings of Bulgari jewels, including a Serpenti High Jewellery watch in 18k white gold, a double spiral bracelet, and rings on almost every finger, all set with diamonds. There’s also actress Lily Gladstone, who celebrated her Native American heritage by wearing a pair of earrings by Blackfeet/Cree bead artist Lenise Omeasoo of Antelope Women Designs, paired with custom Valentino and a Bulgari High Jewellery necklace with 50-carats of round and pear-shaped diamonds.

On the other hand, the night’s most significant trends for men were far easier to ascertain than those for women. A collar bone-skimming necklace and a lapel pin or brooch were the masculine orders of the day, as well as some seriously expressive swags and festoons demonstrated by Irish actor Barry Keoghan and American star Colman Domingo. The former wore a Tiffany & Co. brooch atop his raspberry Louis Vuitton suit, plus a necklace and matching stud earring from the Louis Vuitton ‘Dynasty’ costume jewellery collection. The latter put lapels back on the map with a starburst brooch and a double-pin brooch connected by a sweep of chains – the perfect way to add interest to a military-style black suit.

Other notable mentions include actor Simu Liu, who wore an Assael Tahitian pearl and diamond jabot pin; Bill Hader, who opted for a Dior Lily of the Valley brooch; Timothee Chalamet in an 18k white gold, black ceramic and diamond necklace by Cartier; Jared Leto in a Panthère de Cartier necklace, and singer-songwriter Jon Batiste who opted for Tiffany & Co. Hardwear bracelets, Lock bangle, and a Jean Schlumberger Starfish brooch with a significantly sized aquamarine.
So, what do you think? Is the absence of a necklace a trend that’s somehow creeping into the Hollywood styling rule book this season? Let’s wait and see what the SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and the Oscars have in store for us before we jump to conclusions.
