Golden Globes 2020: Red Carpet Jewellery

The 77th annual Golden Globes provided a host of exciting red carpet jewellery moments to kick off the Hollywood awards season. Attending one of the most prestigious events in the cinema and TV calendar, stars did not disappoint with their choices of precious adornments.

The red carpet of the 2020 Golden Globes was ruled by Tiffany&Co., Bulgari, and Harry Winston, with the biggest, best and highest volume of fine jewellery looks coming from these three luxury houses. Their one-of-a-kind necklaces featuring diamonds, emeralds or sapphires turned heads and dominated the red carpet. 

A crop of jewels combining blue and green gemstones was spotted on many a celebrity: from Charlize Theron who wore Tiffany & Co. choker with a statement central emerald, diamonds and sapphires set in platinum, to Taylor Swift wearing Lorraine Schwartz asymmetrical Australian black opal and sapphire earrings. Sapphires and emeralds individually took centre stage in noteworthy jewellery looks from Jennifer Lopez, who chose to sport necklaces and earrings with more than 145 carats of Colombian emeralds and diamonds by Harry Winston. Shailene Woodley opted for Bulgari sapphire High Jewellery earrings with a matching ring and a Serpenti white diamond bracelet, while Ana de Armas wore Tiffany and Co. ‘Blue Book 2019’ collection sapphire and diamond necklace and earrings.

One of the most impressive jewellery moments of the Golden Globes came from Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo, who wore a Bulgari necklace featuring a 40 carat cabochon feature sapphire, surrounded by 56.65 carats of diamonds and sapphires valued at over US$3 million. Another star who caused a stir with her look was Zoey Deutch, in a 58.69 carat cabochon sapphire necklace complemented by 22.93 carats of diamonds worn with a pair of flower earrings and two rings, all by Harry Winston.

Italian brand Pomellato accessorised bold looks with their voluminous, colourful jewels which were worn by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett. Blanchett chose Pomellato’s Bahia bracelet in white gold with aquamarine and diamonds, Nudo earrings with blue topaz and diamonds, Tango cuff in rose gold and white diamonds and a Sabbia ring with brown and white diamonds, while Bullock wore a Pomellato Iconica Bavarole necklace, Tango earrings in rose gold, and an Iconica bracelet and rings in rose gold.

Some classic diamond jewellery sparkle was delivered by Jennifer Aniston, Best Actress nominee Scarlett Johannson, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Rachel Weisz and Gwyneth Paltrow and Helen Mirren who all chose to wear monochrome diamond necklaces for the big event. Jennifer Aniston shone in the chic simplicity of a vintage 1950s Cartier diamond necklace from Fred Leighton, Scarlett Johannson went for a classic Hollywood pairing of a sleek red dress with over 120 carats of Bulgari jewels, including the High Jewellery necklace, accessorised with an archival heritage bracelet and stud earrings, and Rachel Weisz completed her look with Harry Winston’s ‘Fifth Avenue’ collection necklace featuring 75.64 carats of diamonds. In case you wondered how much the total worth of Helen Mirren’s Harry Winston red carpet jewels, the 73.55 carat diamond necklace, bracelet over 35 carats and a pair of earrings totalled over US$4 million dollars!

Showing off an unusual way to wear serious jewellery, Gwyneth Paltrow displayed her chosen two Bulgari ‘Fiorever’ necklaces from underneath the collar of her sheer, nude dress, and complemented this with high jewellery earrings and two diamond high jewellery rings totaling almost 100 carats of diamonds. Finally, Priyanka Chopra Jonas sported a Bulgari high jewellery necklace in platinum with over 56 carats in diamonds, valued at over US$1 million.

Several stars chose more reserved jewellery looks, selecting cluster diamond earrings, although long, dangling drop styles were not as in vogue for the evening as we have seen in 2019. Zoë Kravitz, Jodie Comer, Reese Witherspoon and Olivia Coleman all wore sizeable diamond earrings in bold designs – particularly Kravitz’s 32 carat diamond and black jade studs from Lorraine Schwartz. 

Lisa Bonet complemented her ensemble in Fernando Jorge chalcedony and diamond earrings, and Kate Bosworth wore Akoya pearl and diamond earrings by Tasaki. However, none of these looks featured the dynamic movement which Nicole Kidman and Beanie Feldstein’s choices did: Kidman stunned in drop gold earrings by Hanut Singh for Fred Leighton, whilst Feldstein chose Irene Neuwirth carved lapis lazuli drop earrings; both eschewing the convention for sparking shoulder grazers.

Tiffany&Co. has become somewhat of a go-to for actors seeking to partake in the ever-growing trend for men accessorising with diamonds: Ansel Elgort sported a diamond butterfly brooch from the American brand, while Billy Porter wore a statement diamond necklace. Sir Elton John accessorised with a bespoke rocket brooch created by the British jeweller Theo Fennel, while actor Jason Momoa got people talking by wearing a Cartier Art Deco style brooch in white gold, onyx, emerald and diamonds; and a 46mm Ballon Bleu de Cartier rose gold watch.

With the BAFTAs and Oscars red carpets just around the corner and the MET Gala in May, we can’t wait to see what fine jewellery looks the stars have in store for us in 2020!
