Reflecting on my recent whirlwind visit to this year’s Couture show in Las Vegas, I’m excited to share one of the most spectacular pieces I had the pleasure of wearing: the Gismondi 1754 La Fenice diamond necklace. This stunning diamond-set creation stole hearts in Nevada, earning it the prestigious Couture Design Award in the ‘Diamonds above $ 40,000’ category. Continue reading to find out more…

This standout piece draws inspiration from the phoenix, a mythical creature known for its cyclical rebirth from ashes, symbolising resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Massimo Gismondi, Creative Director and CEO of Gismondi 1754 was drawn to this majestic symbol and embarked on a creative journey to capture its resplendent rise from destruction in the design of the necklace. The finished piece – La Fenice – is anchored by a stunning D-colour 5.05 carat white pear-shaped diamond, symbolising the nest of the phoenix and is supported by two strands of diamonds, one round and one pear-shaped, which provide a sturdy foundation for the necklace to gracefully unfold.

The most fascinating part of the design for me is the intentionally disarranged ‘feathers’ or ‘branches’, placed at varying lengths and in different directions. Some are straight, some curved, some stationary, some with movement, and some overlapping. Observing each strand on its own is a joy in itself, but together they have real impact! There are over 64 carats of pear-shaped diamonds and 31 carats of round diamonds in total, creating the appearance of a brilliant, feathered crest that sits atop the chest.

An interesting fact about this necklace is that it took 500 hours to complete! A team of master jewellers brought the jewel to life, progressing from sketch to wax mould, casting, and hand-setting over 100 carats of diamonds. I was fortunate enough to wear this exquisite piece and capture some video content, and I can confidently say that every hour invested in its creation was well worth it. Even before learning that it had won the Couture Design Award, I felt compelled to try it on as I was discovering the abundance of newness at the event. It not only looks stunning but also feels comfortable, resting gracefully on the chest. The pear-shaped centrepiece is striking and instantly draws attention, yet it is the pear and round diamond strands that truly make it special, evoking the delicate texture of a bird’s plumage.

I am truly honoured to be recognised for this exceptional piece, which was a labour of passion and determination during a difficult time for me. It represents the possibilities of the future interpreted in a complex and unique multi-dimensional shape with the movements of La Fenice, Massimo Gismondi.

In the short time I was wearing La Fenice, I felt a sense of energy emanating from the necklace, which was both powerful and invigorating. This is certainly due to the inspiration and storytelling behind its creation, as well as its multi-dimensional shape, proportions, layers, and movement, all of which create a full picture. I am sure you will agree that La Fenice is a beautiful necklace that has gone on a fabulous journey from the Gismondi 1754 atelier in Genoa to the international stage at Couture 2024. Congratulations to the House for producing a shining example of Italian craftsmanship at its finest!
