In 2013, a newspaper published an article about Ahmed Mattar, founder of Pearl Biography. His photograph appeared on the cover with the headline “Dream Diver”. No one could have predicted that this diver would one day own a brand that would participate in the Middle East’s most important jewellery fair.

When Ahmed started telling me the story of Pearl Biography at Jewellery Arabia 2025, he began with the sea. He became a natural pearl diver out of necessity 15 year ago. Work was work, he told me – the type didn’t matter. What followed was a life built on repetition, risk and faith, played out day after day beneath the waves of the Persian Gulf.

During our conversation, I learned that pearl diving is a cycle of emotions. Each journey begins with hope, as thoughts drift towards life, dreams and ambition during the long boat ride. The descent brings fear – the sea offers no guarantees – before focus returns on the seabed, surrounded by your target: oysters. “In the sea, you are always at risk and anything can happen,” Ahmed told me. “But when I see the oysters on the ground, I am filled with positive energy. I think to myself: this is my chance.”

The physical toll of pearl diving is relentless. Three dives a day slowly wear down the body, while the chill of winter settles deep into the bones. Back on land, the work continues for hours, opening oysters one by one. Often, they are empty. Very occasionally, a pearl emerges and the shift in mood is immediate. “God gives you a beautiful pearl, and suddenly you feel like you own the world,” Ahmed said. Living this cycle daily, he believes, builds something fundamental within oneself: “It has made my heart brave. I am a warrior – I never give up.”

It is from this lived experience that Pearl Biography takes its name and inspiration. “It’s my biography,” Ahmed explained. “My story with natural pearls. I started from nothing and built everything through them.” He speaks about pearls with the kind of intimacy that can only come from years spent underwater. “I believe natural pearls are living gemstones. Each one has its own energy. But you need belief and honesty to understand them.”

That philosophy guides every jewel Ahmed creates, underpinned by a strong belief that pearls must retain their original identity and sense of history. “I work with taste, with feeling,” he said. “You develop a design, you put your touch on it and then the magic happens.” The making takes place in his own workshop in Bahrain, alongside trusted craftsmen who understand the patience natural pearls demand, with some creations taking years to come to fruition. Finding matching pearls for earrings can feel like waiting for destiny to align.

To show me what he meant, Ahmed ushered me into the VIP area at Jewellery Arabia, where he presented a selection of exceptional pieces created for special clients. Baroque, round and drop-shaped natural Bahraini pearls formed the centrepiece of each design, from an Art Deco-inspired brooch to a pair of floral drop earrings, each suspending a single lustrous white pearl.

I reach for one jewel to try on: a ring set with a large, uniquely shaped baroque pearl. I have always had a soft spot for irregular-shaped pearls, each one carrying the fingerprint of the sea. Here, the pearl’s organic form, framed by a diamond bow, is embraced rather than concealed. It is a piece that celebrates individuality and the imperfect beauty of nature.

Elsewhere, a pair of earrings showcases matching drop-shaped natural Bahraini pearls – a rarity Ahmed speaks about with reverence. “Sometimes you find one perfect pearl, and then you wait years to find its match,” he said. “When you finally do, it feels like an engagement.”

Today, Ahmed is one of the world’s most significant collectors of natural pearls. He holds more than 10kg of rare specimens, with his authority coming from experience rather than acquisition alone. “I am not only a collector or a trader – I am a diver,” he told me. “I have lived the sea. I know the secrets of natural pearls.”

Growth has been steady for Pearl Biography, with 2025 alone bringing close to one million dollars in jewellery sales, excluding major pieces and loose pearls. Time, however, remains central to Ahmed’s thinking. Progress is measured carefully, step by step. Respecting time, he believes, allows the world to respond in kind. That knowledge, deeply rooted in Bahrain’s pearl-diving heritage, shapes everything he does. “Many people understand diamonds,” he pointed out. “Very few truly understand natural pearls. I am Bahraini. I am from the land of pearls. This is my identity and my responsibility.”

Listening to Ahmed speak, I am reminded how much pearl diving asks of the human spirit. There is risk, repetition and long stretches of uncertainty. When a pearl finally emerges, it is hard-earned, and that, above all else, is what gives it value. In all my years writing about jewellery, I have never encountered a story quite like Ahmed’s, where the value of each piece is inseparable from the life lived to find it. It has changed the way I think about pearls and given me a newfound appreciation for these miracles of the sea, which mean so much more once you understand the physical and emotional discipline required to find them.
