If you’ve always loved the idea of owning a piece of jewellery history, specifically in the form of Jean Schlumberger’s iconic Bird on a Rock motif for Tiffany & Co., now might just be your chance. The brand has launched its debut fine jewellery offering that reinterprets the whimsical feathered creations of Jean Schlumberger in more wearable, everyday formats, including rings, pendants, bracelets and some especially covetable earrings. Plus, there are two new high jewellery suites, bursting with bright blue gemstones, that continue the obsession with perfectly perched avians. Let’s take a closer look…

Tiffany & Co. has been reinterpreting Jean Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock concept – one of the 20th century’s most recognisable jewellery designs - almost since its inception in 1965. The original bird was rooted in Schlumberger’s travels in Asia and the Caribbean, hence the ‘crown’ of jaunty feathers and elaborate plumage. What made the design work was its dual emphasis on a cutesy bird, coupled with a knockout solitaire gemstone that added really wow-factor to lapels. Back in 2023, we wrote about a new collection of high jewellery inspired by the Bird on a Rock design, focusing specifically on some of the jumbo-sized fancy yellow diamond pendants and brooches that Tiffany & Co. had launched. Then, just a year later, we witnessed another interpretation – Owl on a Rock – that formed part of the 2024 Blue Book and featured oval-shaped black opals and star sapphires for a contemporary twist. More recently, at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, stars like Amanda Seyfried continued the red-carpet legacy of Bird on a Rock by transforming a brooch (complete with an 11-carat diamond) into a black satin choker.

All these great instances have something in common, though… they are firmly rooted in high jewellery. One can only presume that Tiffany & Co. was waiting for the 60th anniversary of Bird on a Rock in 2025 to translate the motif into fine jewellery. Or perhaps it had been tracking the resurgence of love for the design before committing to a new, distilled collection? Who knows! Fortunately, what Nathalie Verdeille, Chief Artistic Officer of jewellery and high jewellery, has produced to extend the legacy of Bird on a Rock is quite exciting.

In its most abstract form, the Bird on a Rock by Tiffany Wings collection takes only the fundamentals of overlapping feathers to create pendants, bangles, bracelets and earrings. There’s no sign of the three-dimensional bird here, only its textural constituent parts. Each feather is set with diamonds in ‘hidden’ settings, creating the sense that gems are suspended in mid-air. The shaped edges of each piece also allow for seamless stacking and ensure that pieces can easily nestle together. Of course, Tiffany & Co. is no stranger to a winged motif: Its Blue Book: Tiffany Céleste High Jewellery collection, launched in 2024, includes a series of pieces inspired by feathers and birds in flight. However, what Nathalie Verdeille has achieved here feels very ‘coded’ to the Bird on a Rock cockatoo specifically. These aren’t just random wings, they’re ‘his’ wings.

For the fine jewellery collection, we looked at this bird from another perspective, distilling it down to its essence—the wing—and stylising the motif into elegant, abstract patterns. These sculptural forms intertwine and unfold in textural creations that are as abstract as they are symbolic. – Nathalie Verdeille

Within the fine jewellery offering is another series of pieces that has a much more literal approach. Diamond-set birds are shown from above, almost in mid-flight, crafted in platinum, 18k yellow gold, diamonds and sapphires. There’s a pendant, two different ring variations, and a great pair of stud earrings to choose from, all with a feminine and ladylike elegance. According to Tiffany & Co., the whole collection is inspired by “soaring optimism and [the] boundless potential of love”. It adds: “Each unique piece serves as an inspiration for those embarking on their journey, whether solo or together—a beautiful reminder that the sky is the limit for those who dare to soar. Breaking free from limitations, the Bird on a Rock collection is designed for dreamers.”

At the same time, Tiffany & Co. has launched some Bird on a Rock High Jewels, too. There are two suites of note. One is focused on tanzanites, which the House first introduced in 1968 and now calls its “legacy gemstone”, while the second is centred on turquoise (a signature of Jean Schlumberger) in vibrant robin’s egg blue hues. The former contains a necklace, a bracelet and a pair of earrings, all with diamond and ruby-set birds in platinum and 18k yellow gold and heralding large oval-shaped tanzanites ranging from eight to 12 carats. The necklace is especially striking thanks to its beautiful bi-colour chain with trios of round brilliant-cut diamonds, interspersed with textured yellow gold gripping sparkling solitaires.

For the high jewellery Bird on a Rock designs, we studied birds as Jean Schlumberger did—carefully observing their stances, their feathers, the structures of their wings—to create dynamic forms that seem to flutter and perch upon the wearer. – Nathalie Verdeill

The turquoise suite is also anchored by statement neckwear, this time a lariat featuring turquoise beads and diamond-set stations that mirror the shape of the Bird on a Rock’s recognisable ‘crown’ plumage. At the heart of the 18k yellow gold and platinum piece is a bird in flight, leading the eye to a large, perfectly smooth turquoise cabochon of 16 carats. To accompany this, there is a slightly more reserved pendant with a 16-carat turquoise, further turquoise accents, diamonds and rubies, plus a ring and brooch, both with turquoises of 11 carats and 24 carats, respectively.

So, what do you make of this new chapter in the famed Bird on a Rock story? Although the high jewellery iterations are always going to be the most aesthetically striking, it is impressive how even the pared-back fine jewels are so clearly reminiscent of Schlumberger’s exotic cockatoo. This is the skill of Nathalie Verdeille and her team, who are no doubt preparing the next 60 years of Bird on a Rock greatness… we can’t wait to see what’s next.
