In December 2025, a Tiffany & Co. necklace set with a 13.54-carat Brazilian Paraíba tourmaline sold for $4.2 million at Christie’s New York, shattering its high estimate and setting a new world record for the highest price paid for a Paraíba tourmaline at auction. The result reinforced the intensity of demand for the finest specimens, with few, if any, coloured gemstones currently attracting comparable levels of competition.

This surge in demand did not happen overnight. It has been building for years, with a recent report in the Financial Times describing Paraíba as “the gemstone outpacing gold and inflation”, citing long-term price data from the Tucson Gem Show showing increases exceeding 10,000% since the early 1990s. While appreciation is rarely linear, Paraíba’s upward trajectory has been impossible to ignore.
