Italy’s d’Avossa: A Mother, a Daughter and the Jewellery Language They Crafted Together

Before I knew anything about d’Avossa’s history, I fell in love with its aesthetic. There were no straight lines and no rigid compositions – just softness, movement and an inherent sensuality that could only have been sculpted by hand. I immediately wanted to understand where this deeply personal design language came from. It was only later, meeting Cristiana d’Avossa, that I understood it had been nurtured over decades – first by her mother, the late Misara d’Avossa, and then together, through a shared creative dialogue.

For nearly five decades, d’Avossa has been cultivating its own high jewellery universe in Rome – a universe created by Misara and now carried forward by Cristiana with the same devotion and artistic instinct. My search for that origin led me to Porto Cervo, where d’Avossa’s second boutique sits above the Mediterranean in a light-filled space perfectly suited to experiencing the jewels in person. It was here that I met Cristiana, a passionate second-generation jeweller who continues to build on the foundations her mother laid when she launched the brand in 1975.

Speaking with Cristiana, I quickly discover that d’Avossa’s view has long stretched far beyond Italy. From Porto Cervo to Rome – location of the brand’s flagship boutique – to high jewellery fairs in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha and Baku, its jewels have long attracted women from around the world, including Arab royalty, Hollywood stars and global collectors. Building on this international following, d’Avossa continues to present its high jewellery through curated presentations and seasonal exhibitions, introducing its creations to an ever-wider global audience.

Encountering the jewels up close, what struck me most is how deeply personal each piece feels. Whether a neon-turquoise Paraiba tourmaline necklace or a golden-brown Tahitian pearl ring, this is art jewellery that awakens a response in the wearer, speaking with the certainty of something crafted by hand, guided by feeling and made only once.

d’Avossa has always stood slightly apart from traditional Roman jewellery. Its pieces are unmistakably Italian in their sensuality and craftsmanship, yet they possess a softness and sculptural fluidity that make them instantly recognisable. Clients often describe the designs as “unexpected” and “unpredictable” a departure from the gold-heavy classicism associated with Rome, expressed instead through vibrant gemstones, airy volumes and forms that seem to move of their own accord. At the heart of d’Avossa lies the bond between Misara d’Avossa and Cristiana. Misara was first her daughter’s muse and, in time, her creative companion. What began with a young girl watching her mother lay out trays of stones with contagious delight grew into an artistic dialogue that gave rise to the brand’s distinctive identity – a way of imagining and creating that Cristiana now carries forward with devotion with every new piece she conceives. Cristiana recalls these moments vividly: “One of my dearest memories is of our evenings after returning from a gem-buying trip,” she tells me. “We would sit together in the hotel room, open our new treasures one by one, and marvel at them like children discovering secrets. Immediately, we began imagining the jewels they would become.”

For Cristiana, these early experiences guided her entire way of seeing and, later, designing. “My mother is the origin of everything,” she says. “Her love for gemstones, for their hidden luminosity, taught me to look at them not as materials, but as living worlds. I feel her presence in every piece I create.”

Although Misara is no longer here, the creative dialogue she shared with Cristiana continues to inform every d’Avossa jewel. An idea still begins the way it always did – with a colour, a line or a stone – and Cristiana instinctively follows the process she once shared with her mother. “We had our own game,” she smiles. “One of us would start, the other would tweak it. And in the end, something beautiful always came to life.” That wordless complicity remains the soul of d’Avossa today. This is jewellery that feels effortless rather than engineered, imagined rather than simply designed and sculptural in the truest, softest sense.

Everything begins with the gems that immediately speak to Cristiana – and, during my visit to the Porto Cervo boutique, to me as well. It is here that I am introduced to an exquisite crab bracelet, completely encrusted in Fancy coloured diamonds; a magnificent kunzite ring wrapped in a cluster of pink and orange sapphires; and an elegant yet daring necklace composed of entwined strands of aquamarine, tanzanite, apatite and sapphires. Each jewel feels unexpected in its own way – the unmistakable d’Avossa mix of softness, spontaneity and artistic expression.

Cristiana inherited her passion for mixing coloured gemstones from her mother, Misara, using instinct rather than convention to create combinations that reveal, rather than dominate, a stone’s personality. The d’Avossa palette is wonderfully unpredictable, extending to tanzanites, Peau d’Ange coral and Fancy coloured diamonds in warm, sunlit hues that dissolve into yellow gold. 

For the summer season in Porto Cervo, Cristiana has curated a selection of jewels that capture the sense of light and colour that are d’Avossa signatures. “I always want to bring intensity and joy into what I create,” she tells me. “Rubies, emeralds, rare Fancy diamonds and extraordinary Paraiba tourmalines, each set in our sculptural gold, chosen for the energy and emotion they bring.”

As my time in Porto Cervo draws to a close, Cristiana returns to the idea that guides everything she creates: evolution without dilution. “Emotion will always come before design, and instinct before structure,” she tells me. “The materials may change, the techniques may evolve, but the way we see – that feeling – will always guide d’Avossa.” It’s a philosophy she inherited from her mother and continues to honour in every piece. That artistic identity is captured beautifully in Ribbon, a collection of limited-edition jewels crafted from precious metal as though it were fabric caught in motion. Its spiralling lines, flowing, feminine and ever-changing, are the perfect expression of the d’Avossa sensibility.

It’s this sense of continuity and reinvention that drives d’Avossa forwards. New stones will appear. New techniques will be explored. Yet every jewel will bear the same signature: a softness, fluidity and artistic intuition that Cristiana and Misara have nurtured since the very beginning.
